Epstein barr virus, chronic fatigue syndrome, What is the relationship? First, we need to define what is the definition of Chronice fatigue syndrome (CFS). CFS is a debilitating and complex disorder characterized by intense fatigue that is not improved by bed rest and that may be worsened by physical activity or mental exertion.
The other name of Chronic fatigue syndrome are myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and, more recently, systemic exertion intolerance disease (SEID).The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is still unknown, although there are many Some experts believe chronic fatigue syndrome might be triggered by a combination of factors. But in several articles, Epstein Barr became the first suspect of the cause.

There are three category to diagnose chronic fatigue syndrome.
1. The fatigue significantly disturbs the work and the daily activity.
2. The fatigue has lasted for six or more consecutive months that is not related with ongoing exertion or other medical conditions.
3. The patients concurrently has at least four or more of the following eight symptoms.
a. post-exertion malaise lasting more than 24 hours
b. unrefreshing sleep
c. significant impairment of short-term memory or concentration
d. muscle pain
e. pain in the joints without swelling or redness
f. headaches of a new type, pattern, or severity
g. tender lymph nodes in the neck or armpit
h. a sore throat that is frequent or recurring

Both terms always associated as a cause and a result. Some studies mentioned Epstein barr virus as the first suspect to cause chronic fatigue syndrome. Two other cause to be considered are Human herpes virus 6, and enterovirus.
Anyway, the relation of Epstein barr virus and chronic fatigue syndrome has not fully understood. A lot of researcher have studied the possibility of a single type infection might become the cause of CFS. And to date, they not found a strong evidence that Epstein Barr can cause Chronic fatigue syndrome. Perhaps, it is because the symptoms of infectious mononucleosis is similar with Chronic fatigue syndrome, so, many researcher think so.
